Dr. Joanne V. Baldwin is a 1973 graduate of Kansas State University. She has been practicing small and exotic animal medicine in Richmond, VA since 1974. Her goal is to educate animal owners to the needs of their pets to optimize the life of the pet and to make the most of the human/animal bond. Her focus is on a combination of conventional and holistic medicine to provide an opportunity for the animal's immune system to assist medical therapy. The ability to decide when to intervene and when to allow nature to do the healing is an integral part of the art of veterinary medicine. Doc raises and shows Havana Silk Dogs. She shares her Goochland home with 8 Havana Silk Dogs... Posy, Pearlie, Pala, Penny, Lark, Karma, Dancer, & Star, along with 2 cats, Willy & Waylon. When you arrrive you may meet one or more dogs as they often visit Cardinal! Chico, the English Budgie is a full time resident at Cardinal. Listen for his cheerful chirping!

Stephanie is our Certified Veterinary Technician. She will handle your pet with competence and compassion and when she greets your pet her love for animals just shines. Before joining the Cardinal staff Stephanie worked at animal hospitals in Chicago and Richmond. We are very lucky to have Stephanie with us and she is just as kind to people as she is to animals. Stephanie & her husband, Marvin, have a dog, Montana, three cats - Bimini, Isis, & a new, as yet unnamed, kitten. In her spare time she loves to scuba dive and studies belly dancing.

Liza is our Veterinary Assistant. Liza brings to Cardinal a most sunny disposition and cheerful personality along with a true love and appreciation for our patients. Liza and her husband, Aziz, have, 3 children, Jack, Ziggy, & Sally, and a very cool cat. Liza and Stephanie make a great team as they often work together both in the exam room and in surgery.

Sarah is our customer service specialist. Sarah has a degree in criminal justice but she won't give you the third degree.  She is soft spoken, efficient, polite and will see that your visit at Cardinal is a pleasant one. Sarah is always willing to help so if you have questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask!

Shannon is our part-time receptionist. Personable, cheerful and efficient, Shannon is always willing to assist you. Embracing the Cardinal philosophy of pets as family, Shannon greets our patients as if they were family members. When not greeting you and your pets, Shannon is a performing artist.

Richi was our 'behind the scenes' brains and skill behind our modern computer operation. If it plugs in and uses artificial intelligence then Richi could make it sing and dance! He was our own on site 24/7 tech support! Sadly we lost Richi on 3/30/2009 after a long illness. He will be sorely missed.
